Eliya Sleeva Moosa

MK 17:9-13 Syro-Malabar II Sunday of Eliya Sleeva Moosa

Gospel: Matthew 17:9-13

As they were coming down from the mountain - Elijah has already come

CATHOLIC HOMILY - "From the Mountain to the Mission"

Introduction - The Gospel Context

My dear brothers and sisters,

Yesterday we were on top of Mount Tabor. Peter said, "Lord, it is good to be here, let us make three tents." They saw Jesus transfigured, shining like the sun.

Today, in Matthew 17:9-13, they are _coming down_ from the mountain.

And that is our Christian life. We cannot stay on the mountain forever. We have to come down to the valley where there is sickness, family problems, and sin. The true faith is not proved on the mountain of consolation, but in the valley of daily life.

As they come down, Jesus gives two teachings.

1. Reflection: "Tell no one until the Son of Man is raised" (v.9)

Why silence? Because without the Cross, the glory of Tabor has no meaning. If people see only a shining Jesus without understanding the suffering Jesus, they will want a magic-god, not a Savior.

For us Catholics, this is important. We often want only miracles, blessings, healing - the mountain-top experience. But Jesus says: You will understand my glory only after you understand my Cross and Resurrection.

Our faith journey is the same. We cannot preach Christ only as a success-giver. We must walk with Him through Good Friday to reach Easter Sunday.

2. Reflection: "Elijah has already come" (v.12-13)

The Jews believed Elijah would come back before the Messiah. Jesus says, "Elijah has already come - John the Baptist - but they did not recognize him, they did to him whatever they pleased."

This is a painful truth. *God visits us, but we fail to recognize Him.*

John the Baptist came in the desert, simple clothes, strong voice calling for repentance. People expected a great prophet with fire from heaven. So they rejected him.

How does God come to us today? Not always in loud miracles. He comes as:

- A parish priest correcting us

- A wife or husband telling us to leave alcohol

- A poor neighbor asking for help

- A quiet voice in Confession

And like that time, we also say, "No, this cannot be God." We reject the messenger.

STORY / ANECDOTE

There was a old catechist in a village in Tripura. Every Sunday he told his family, "Let's pray together, let's go for Mass." His son thought, "My father is old-fashioned, always church-church."

One day the father died. After his death, the son found his father's diary. Only one sentence was written every day: _"Today I prayed for my son to come back to God."_ For 15 years, same prayer.

That day the son cried. He realized - Elijah had come to his house every day in the form of his father, but he did not recognize him until he was gone.

How many Elijahs has God sent to our homes?

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

1. Come down from the mountain.

Don't keep your faith only in church. After Sunday Mass, bring that light to your workplace, your jhum field, your WhatsApp group. Ask: Where does God want me to bring light this week?

2. Recognize your Elijah.

This week, who is God sending to correct you? Maybe it is your mother, your child, your friend. Don't reject the message because you don't like the messenger. John the Baptist was rough and poor, but he spoke God's truth.

Make a list tonight: 2 persons who have been my "Elijah" and I ignored them. Go and say thank you, or sorry.

3. Embrace the Cross before the Glory.

If you are going through a dark time - sickness, debt, broken family - remember Jesus said: The Son of Man will suffer. Suffering is not a sign that God left you. It is the road to transfiguration. Offer your suffering in this week's Mass.

Practical application:

The disciples understood that Jesus was speaking about John the Baptist. May we also understand that God is speaking to us today.

Let us not wait to recognize God's voice only when it is too late. Let us listen today.

Let Mother Mary, who recognized Jesus from the manger to the Cross, teach us to recognize God in simple things.

Amen.
